The Fungal Frontiers Explorers and Cosmic Travelers have expanded the Hurricane Scale Rating System up to Category 12 to account for the potential of encountering extreme weather conditions beyond Earth. While the traditional Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale only goes up to Category 5, the FFMV recognized the need to prepare for even more powerful storms in cosmic environments.
As explorers venture into uncharted territories on other planets, they may encounter storms that surpass the intensity of those found on Earth. For instance, Jupiter’s Great Red Spot features winds between 250 and 425 mph, while Neptune’s storms can reach an astonishing 1,200 mph – nearly three times as powerful as a Category 5 hurricane on Earth (with winds ranging from 157-174 mph).
By extending the scale to Category 12, the FFMV aims to better equip Cosmic Travelers and Fungal Frontiers Explorers to understand and prepare for potential super-storms they might face on other planets. This expanded scale serves as a vital tool for predicting potential damage, ensuring the safety of explorers, and fostering a deeper understanding of these otherworldly meteorological phenomena.
